Why Do We Procrastinate?

I remember hearing that Eskimos have over a hundred different words for snow. As a skier, I know that we’ve got at least a dozen ourselves!

African farmers have about twenty different words for the color brown. Each describes a slightly different shade that you and I might not even notice, but the farmer can detect information like the health of his cattle by each of these shades.

We all make distinctions based on our level of knowledge and interest in a particular topic. The more we know about something and the more we focus on it, the more clearly we see distinctions between things others may not notice.


Such is the case with the word procrastination. Most people don’t make a study of what moves them to action…and what stops them…So, they have just the one word. They haven’t dug any deeper to make the distinctions necessary to solve their own individual issues.

But I’ve studied this area thoroughly, and I know there are eight different reasons people procrastinate. And this is of HUGE importance to anyone who wants to know what’s stopping them and how to get into action consistently.

Direct Sales Business & Procrastination

So, direct sellers…listen up!

If you’re serious about your direct sales business, there’s only one important question. Are you implementing the action steps it takes to create success? It doesn’t matter what you know or what you feel like or what you enjoy. All that matters to your success is ACTION!

And if you’re willing to agree to that premise, the next question is what’s stopping you? If you’re like most people, you haven’t made the right distinctions. So, every time you fail to take action, you explain it away in the same way. Maybe you say, “I’m lazy!” Maybe you say, “I have no will power!” Maybe you say, “I’ve just got too much to do!”

What if none of those things were actually true? What if your reasons for stopping or delaying useful action were one of eight different, very simple, very straightforward mental gaps that could be filled easily once you knew what they were?

In other words, what if you knew how to make the necessary distinctions and respond to each in its own way – in its own direct, effective way?

That’s the takeaway one of my students, Pam McClammy, shared with me earlier today. We were discussing my Procrastination Annihilation course which she just finished taking, and she said,

“It was SUCH an eye-opener to me to see how many different things I in my life relate back to procrastination. I had one definition of procrastination, but what you showed me was that everything that was keeping me from succeeding was just one more of the eight flavors of procrastination. Now, I handle each one differently because of the distinctions…and I’m UNSTOPPABLE!”

If you want to gain mastery over your own mind, and have a strategy to get into action no matter what, you’ll need to work off the procrastination checklist. Once you make the distinctions between which of these fits in any given situation, you’ll have a path to get through it. Here are the eight distinctions regarding procrastination.

Why Are You Procrastinating?

You’re either procrastinating because of….

  • Ignorance
  • Apathy
  • Momentum
  • Boredom
  • Rush Addiction
  • Apprehension
  • Vagueness
  • Emptiness

Every one of these is different, and requires a different remedy.

For example, if you’re procrastinating because of apprehension, you’ll need to learn strategies for overcoming fear and gaining more confidence in what you’re doing. This applies to sponsoring and sharing your opportunity with others.

On the other hand, if you keep running out of time before you get around to the things you meant to do, that’s a momentum issue, and you need some simple strategies for blocking off time in a non-negotiable way. That’s an entirely different problem from the first, with an entirely different solution!

Once you understand each of these, what the qualities of each flavor of procrastination are, and how to fill the mental gap that’s represented by that flavor, you too will be UNSTOPPABLE.
